As the world gradually recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic, we have an opportunity to build a cleaner, greener and more prosperous world, said a senior official of the British Deputy High Commission in Kolkata.
“We are at a turning point for our planet. As we recover from COVID-19, we have a unique and priceless opportunity to build a cleaner, greener, more resilient and more prosperous world. The window to do so is closing. The decisions we make now will directly impact future generations,” said British Deputy High Commissioner to Kolkata, Nick Low during an online interactive session with noted Odia filmmaker Nila Madhab Panda, today.
Low spoke to Panda today to talk about climate change and how the United Kingdom is working with partners in India ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), scheduled to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from 1 to 12 November 2021 under the presidency of the UK.
Talking about the impact of climate change on the society, Low said that as the COP26 president, the UK would take the lead in supporting a clean, inclusive and resilient recovery building on the principles of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals. The UK would work to ensure that the linked challenges of public health, climate change and biodiversity are addressed, he added.
To recall, the UK’s GREAT for Sustainable Future campaign recently featured environmental filmmaker Nila Madhab Panda. In that video, Panda talked about the impact of climate change and how it affects people at the grassroots.
“Through his films, Dr. Panda has been raising awareness on the critical issue of climate change and its impact at the grassroots. I hope to see him in person when I visit Odisha later this year,” said Low.
During discussion with the British Deputy High Commissioner, Panda said that we have to be conscious about our environment.
“Our environment is no more in a state that we can take it for granted. It is affecting each one of us in some form or the other. Climate change is a reality and its happening. Each of us has to be conscious about our own environment. That’s how we can think of creating a sustainable future,” said Panda.
