Six port clusters, comprising four port clusters with capacities exceeding 300 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) namely the Cochin – Vizhinjam Port cluster, Galathea South Bay Port, Chennai – Kamarajar – Cuddalore Port cluster, Paradip, and Other Non-Major Ports cluster, alongside two port clusters with capacities exceeding 500 MTPA, namely the Deendayal and Tuna Tekra Port cluster, and the Jawaharlal Nehru – Vadhavan Port cluster, are slated for transformation into Mega Ports by the year 2047. The blueprint for this ambitious endeavor lies within the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision, 2047, encompassing a spectrum of activities aimed at augmenting capacity and enhancing infrastructure across Major Ports.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, elucidated these strategic initiatives in a written reply to the Lok Sabha today. Emphasizing a proactive approach, he highlighted the ongoing efforts already underway to fortify infrastructure and expand capacities within Major Ports, facilitated through a blend of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models and internal resource allocation.
