Rourkela Steel Plant achieves milestone performance, sets new production records

ROURKELA, APRIL 04, 2024 (TBB BUREAU): SAIL-run Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) concluded the fiscal year 2023-24 on a triumphant note, marking its best-ever production figures across key production areas since its inception.

In an extraordinary display of efficiency and capability, RSP recorded remarkable production numbers for the fiscal year, with a staggering 44,94,258 tons of Hot Metal, 41,61,241 tons of Crude Steel, and 42,11,205 tons of Saleable Steel. This achievement reflects a significant Year-On-Year growth of 4.3%, 3%, and an impressive 11.6%, respectively.

Of particular note is the historic milestone of surpassing the 4 million-tonne mark for Saleable Steel production, a first in RSP’s illustrious history. Blast Furnace-5 (BF-5) scaled new heights by producing an all-time high of 28,76,540 tons of Hot Metal, while Steel Melting Shop-2 achieved its best-ever performance by producing 36,61,172 tons of Crude Steel. Concurrently, the Sinter Plants also excelled, contributing to the record-breaking production figures.

The Hot Strip Mill-2 (HSM-2) emerged as a significant contributor to this success story, rolling an unprecedented 23,75,457 tons of HR Coils, marking an astonishing 34% growth over the previous fiscal year.

The exceptional production trend was mirrored in the dispatch as well, with RSP dispatching an all-time best record of 4152343 tonnes of Saleable Steel in 2023-24, surpassing its previous best performance in 2022-23.

Techno-economically, RSP achieved stellar performances across various key areas, with Specific Energy Consumption, Specific Power Consumption, and Specific Water Consumption all registering commendable figures. The Combined Power Generation at CPP-1 & CPP-3 also hit an all-time high of 69.17 Mega Watts in the last fiscal.

Furthermore, RSP’s outstanding performance was punctuated with several national records set by individual departments. These include achieving a Torpedo Ladle campaign life of 2865 heats in March 2024 and recording the highest-ever long sequence in Caster #3 of 309 heats in January 2024.

RSP Director In-Charge Atanu Bhowmick congratulated the collective on the superlative performance, emphasizing the challenges ahead and the need for continued dedication to achieving the ambitious targets set for the current fiscal year.
