Indian Railways achieves record coal loading of 728 million tons in 2023-24

New Delhi, July 12, 2024 (TBB Bureau):  Indian Railways has achieved a significant milestone in coal transportation, marking a record increase in coal loading during the financial year 2023-24. According to data released by the Ministry of Railways, coal loading surged to 787.58 million tons, up from 727.98 million tons in the previous fiscal year 2022-23, registering a substantial rise of 59.6 million tons.

The ministry also reported that the revenue generated in FY 2023-24 amounted to Rs 86,838.35 crore. This growth trajectory has continued into the current financial year, with Indian Railways recording a total freight loading of 135.46 million tons in June 2024, marking a robust 10.07% increase compared to June 2023.

Of the total freight loaded in June 2024, domestic coal constituted 60.27 million tons, while imported coal accounted for 8.82 million tons. The railways have also shown commendable progress in track renewal, with a 13.8% increase in FY 2023-24 compared to the previous year. This enhancement, highlighted in a ministry statement, has contributed significantly to improving operational efficiency and safety.

In FY 2022-2023, Indian Railways renewed 5,227 track kilometers (TKM), whereas in FY 2023-2024, this figure rose to 5,950 TKM, underscoring the railways’ commitment to infrastructure development and operational excellence.
