Hindustan Zinc’s all-women mine rescue team to represent India at global competition

Udaipur, September 14, 2024 (TBB Bureau): In a groundbreaking move for gender representation in the mining industry, Hindustan Zinc Limited’s all-women mine rescue team is set to make history by representing India at the prestigious XIII International Mine Rescue Competition. This event, organized by Colombia’s National Mining Agency under the aegis of the International Mines Rescue Body (IMRB), will feature 26 teams from across the globe.

The all-women team from Hindustan Zinc is the first of its kind in India, marking a significant milestone in the country’s mining sector. “This is a historic breakthrough, as it is the first time an all-women team from India will compete on such a prestigious international stage, showcasing their exceptional rescue skills,” said Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc Limited.

This initiative highlights Hindustan Zinc’s unwavering commitment to promoting gender diversity and equality, offering women opportunities to excel across all levels of the mining industry. The company has been at the forefront of ensuring that women are not only included but are empowered to lead in traditionally male-dominated sectors.

The seven-member team will compete in six challenging categories, including rescue drills in breathing and non-breathing atmospheres, first aid, mining rescue skills, equipment handling, and theoretical knowledge. These rigorous tests simulate real-life mine rescue operations, pushing participants to demonstrate their technical expertise and agility in high-pressure situations.

The annual competition, held in various countries, is a prestigious platform that showcases the resilience, skill, and knowledge of mine rescue teams worldwide. As Hindustan Zinc’s trailblazing women prepare to take on this global challenge, their participation serves as a powerful testament to the growing influence of women in industries once reserved for men.

This landmark achievement not only elevates India’s standing on the global mining stage but also underscores the transformative role women play in shaping the future of mining.
