Bhubaneswar, September 20, 2024 (TBB Bureau): Tata Steel on Friday inaugurated India’s largest blast furnace at its Kalinganagar facility in Odisha, a key milestone in its Phase II expansion. With an investment of Rs 27,000 crore, this expansion will boost production capacity from 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 8 MTPA.
With this expansion, Odisha has solidified its status as Tata Steel’s largest investment destination in India, accumulating over Rs 100,000 crore in the past decade.
Tata Steel CEO and Managing Director TV Narendran highlighted the significance of the new furnace, stating it sets new benchmarks in capacity, technology, and sustainability. He thanked the Government of Odisha for their support and acknowledged the contributions of employees and partners.
The 5,870 m³ blast furnace features advanced technology, including four top combustion stoves and a first-of-its-kind dry gas cleaning plant. It also houses the world’s largest Top Gas Recovery Turbine (35 MW) for energy recovery and an innovative evaporative cooling system that reduces water and power consumption by 20 per cent. Designed for sustainability, it includes a zero-process water discharge plan and rainwater harvesting.
