Hindustan Zinc to host Vedanta Zinc City Half Marathon in Udaipur

Udaipur, September 25, 2024  (TBB Bureau): Hindustan Zinc’s Vedanta Zinc City Half Marathon, widely regarded as India’s most beautiful marathon and one of the world’s most scenic races, is set to attract thousands of participants from across the globe. The event will take place at the iconic Udaipur Field Club on Sunday, 29th September 2024.

The inaugural marathon boasts a prize pool of substantial cash rewards and vouchers, drawing both marathon enthusiasts and elite runners to a stunning route that winds around the serene Fateh Sagar Lake, framed by the majestic Aravalli ranges. Finishers will be awarded a distinctive medal crafted from the finest zinc produced by Hindustan Zinc, symbolizing the event’s connection to the city and the metal it is known for. The medal was unveiled at a press conference attended by Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc Limited; Manoj Soni, Founder of Anybody Can Run (ABCR); Umesh Manwani, Honorary Secretary of the Udaipur Field Club, and other notable dignitaries.

As an official member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), the Vedanta Zinc City Half Marathon holds AIMS certification, granting it international recognition. The marathon offers three race categories—5 km, 10 km, and 21 km—allowing participants to explore Udaipur’s rich heritage along a scenic route that includes landmarks such as the Maharana Pratap Smarak, Saheliyon Ki Bari, and Neemuch Mata Mandir hill.

This year’s marathon carries the theme #RunForZeroHunger, reflecting Hindustan Zinc’s commitment to social responsibility. For every kilometer run, Hindustan Zinc has pledged to provide a zinc-rich meal to an undernourished child, making the event a meaningful contribution toward combating hunger.

The event also celebrates Udaipur’s deep connection with zinc, a metal central to the city’s identity for over 2,500 years. Long before it became known as the City of Lakes, Udaipur’s zinc mining and smelting heritage contributed significantly to the region’s development, including during the Bronze Age.

Krishna Prakash, Chief of Maharashtra Police (Force One) and the first Indian civil services officer to complete the Ironman Triathlon, will serve as the race ambassador. His achievements, including completing the Ultraman World Championship, make him an inspiring figure for participants.

Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc and a marathon enthusiast, shared his excitement: “Marathons are a great way to unwind, relax, and discover stories at every turn. The Vedanta Zinc City Half Marathon offers a unique experience, bringing international attention to Udaipur while uniting people for the noble cause of #RunForZeroHunger. Through this event, we hope to inspire a healthier lifestyle and support our mission to fight malnutrition.”

Umesh Manwani, Honorary Secretary of Udaipur Field Club, emphasized the marathon’s role in enhancing the city’s charm: “This marathon celebrates Udaipur’s rich heritage. As the venue partner, our priority is to ensure the safety of all runners and provide them with an unforgettable experience.”

To support participants, Anybody Can Run (ABCR) has organized hydration stations along the route, along with medical support and resting points staffed by physiotherapists and doctors, ensuring a seamless experience for all runners.

Hindustan Zinc Limited, a Vedanta Group company, is the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer and third-largest silver producer, with a market share of 75% of India’s primary zinc market. Recognized as the world’s most sustainable company in the metals and mining category by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2023, Hindustan Zinc is a leader in operational excellence and ESG practices. The company recently launched EcoZen, Asia’s first low-carbon zinc brand, produced using renewable energy and boasting a carbon footprint 75% lower than the global average.
