Environment Ministry introduces Ecomark Rules to promote sustainable consumption

New Delhi, October 4, 2024 (TBB Bureau):  The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on Friday officially notified the Ecomark Rules as part of the ‘LiFE’ (Lifestyle for Environment) initiative, which was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021. This new framework, established on September 26, 2024, replaces the Ecomark scheme introduced in 1991, signifying a modern approach to promoting environmentally friendly products in India.

The Ecomark Rules aim to encourage the demand for eco-friendly products that align with the principles of sustainability. This initiative focuses on reducing energy consumption, enhancing resource efficiency, and fostering a circular economy. By ensuring accurate labeling of products, the scheme seeks to prevent misleading information, thereby empowering consumers to make informed choices.

Under the Ecomark Scheme, products will be required to meet specific environmental criteria, ensuring they have a minimal ecological impact. This initiative not only aims to raise consumer awareness regarding environmental issues but also seeks to motivate manufacturers to transition towards more sustainable production practices.

The implementation of the Ecomark Scheme will be overseen by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), in collaboration with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This partnership is expected to enhance the effectiveness and reach of the scheme, ensuring that it meets its goals of promoting sustainable lifestyles.

The introduction of the Ecomark Rules marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards sustainability. By encouraging both individual and collective decision-making in consumption patterns, the government aims to foster a culture of sustainability across the nation. This initiative aligns with global sustainability goals and reflects the Indian government’s commitment to environmental conservation and protection.

As the Ecomark Scheme takes effect, stakeholders across the supply chain — from manufacturers to consumers — are encouraged to embrace sustainable practices, thereby contributing to a healthier planet and a more sustainable future for all.
