Vedanta Aluminium becomes first Indian smelter to connect to LME Passport platform

New Delhi, October 10, 2024 (TBB Bureau): Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Indian smelter to integrate with the London Metal Exchange (LME) Passport platform. This landmark achievement positions Vedanta Aluminium as one of only five primary aluminium producers globally to digitally connect its metal quality analysis system with the LME Passport, revolutionizing how Certificates of Analysis (CoA) are submitted.

The LME Passport platform allows smelters to digitally submit CoAs, ensuring greater efficiency, accuracy, and transparency. By automating this process, Vedanta Aluminium eliminates the need for paper-based documentation, reducing the risk of errors and enhancing traceability throughout the metal supply chain, from production to delivery. This integration marks a pivotal advancement in Vedanta’s operations, streamlining quality assurance and reinforcing compliance for all its metal shipments.

Commenting on this achievement, Sunil Gupta, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Vedanta Aluminium, said, “Our successful implementation of the LME Passport reflects Vedanta Aluminium’s unwavering commitment to adopting cutting-edge digital technologies. This initiative enhances our operational efficiency and ensures we meet the highest global standards in metal quality assurance. By leading the way in this digital transformation, we are reinforcing our commitment to delivering top-quality products with full transparency to our customers.”

As the world’s central hub for industrial metal trading, the LME sets the global benchmark price for aluminium and has mandated all primary aluminium smelters to digitize their CoA submission processes by October 2024. Vedanta Aluminium’s early adoption of the LME Passport not only ensures compliance with these evolving standards but also strengthens its leadership in innovation and operational efficiency.

This achievement is a testament to Vedanta Aluminium’s dedication to excellence and sustainability, further enhancing India’s standing in the global aluminium market. The company’s proactive approach in integrating with the LME Passport underscores its role as a leader in driving industry innovations and promoting a greener, more sustainable future for the aluminium industry.

Vedanta Aluminium, a division of Vedanta Limited, produced 2.37 million tonnes of aluminium in FY24, accounting for more than half of India’s total production. As a leader in value-added aluminium products, Vedanta plays a critical role in core industries worldwide. The company was ranked first in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2023 for the aluminium industry, highlighting its commitment to sustainable development practices. With its world-class smelters, alumina refinery, and power plants, Vedanta Aluminium continues to drive emerging applications of aluminium as the “Metal of the Future.”
