Lanjigarh, November 5, 2024 (TBB Bureau): Vedanta Lanjigarh, a flagship unit of Vedanta Aluminium and India’s leading producer of smelter-grade alumina, has initiated a rigorous series of safety training sessions and workshops aimed at elevating workplace safety standards across its operations. This initiative brought together over 250 employees and business partners to engage in comprehensive sessions, including mock drills, live demonstrations, and specialized workshops focused on critical safety practices.
The six-monthly mock drills, integral to the safety initiative, are designed to reinforce emergency response protocols, enabling safety teams to respond adeptly to potential emergencies, such as evacuations, fire hazards, electrical issues, and security threats. Senior district officials responsible for industrial oversight were also present, underscoring the collaborative commitment to a “zero harm” workplace and safeguarding surrounding communities.
A key highlight of the initiative was the Critical Risk Management (CRM) workshop, where participants addressed critical safety concerns such as pedestrian-vehicular interactions, working at heights, and managing isolation and confined space risks. Spanning 13 essential safety topics, the workshop focused on promoting secure road safety practices, ensuring safe elevated work conditions, implementing rigorous isolation procedures near high-voltage areas, and establishing effective protocols for confined space rescue operations.
Commenting on the initiative, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharyya, CEO – Alumina Business, Vedanta Ltd., reaffirmed the company’s unwavering commitment to safety. “We are dedicated to fostering a robust safety culture through behavioral training and a zero-tolerance approach to unsafe practices. Our proactive investments in monitoring, mitigation, and safeguarding measures reflect our commitment to operational excellence and unwavering safety standards at every level,” he stated.
Vedanta Aluminium’s Lanjigarh refinery has implemented numerous programs to strengthen its safety culture. These include the Suraksha Sankalp Diwas, a monthly campaign to promote safety awareness among employees and partners, and Training on Wheels, a mobile program that provides on-site safety training via live demonstrations. Advanced AI-driven speed monitoring cameras have been installed to enhance road safety on site, while CRM modules reinforce safety measures for a range of high-risk activities including electrical work, crane operations, equipment management, and vehicular safety. The refinery’s safety protocols are consistently enforced by dedicated safety officers and through systematic advocacy for the use of personal protective equipment.
This comprehensive approach highlights Vedanta Lanjigarh’s commitment to embedding a culture of safety, demonstrating that a safe and secure work environment is fundamental to its operational ethos.
