Jio Platforms Limited (JPL) has announced a groundbreaking agreement with SpaceX to bring Starlink’s satellite broadband services to India. Subject to regulatory approvals, the collaboration will enhance Jio’s internet offerings by integrating Starlink’s advanced low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology with Jio’s extensive digital infrastructure.
The agreement enables Jio to distribute Starlink’s high-speed internet solutions through its retail outlets and online platforms, ensuring connectivity even in the most remote corners of India. As the world’s largest mobile operator in terms of data traffic, Jio aims to leverage Starlink’s capabilities to extend seamless broadband coverage across the country.
Beyond offering Starlink equipment, Jio will provide installation and activation support, reinforcing its commitment to making high-speed internet accessible to enterprises, small and medium businesses, and underserved communities. The satellite service will complement JioAirFiber and JioFiber, ensuring rapid and affordable connectivity in areas where traditional broadband deployment faces challenges.
Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, emphasized the impact of the partnership, saying, “Ensuring that every Indian, no matter where they live, has access to affordable and high-speed broadband remains Jio’s top priority. Our collaboration with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India strengthens our commitment and marks a transformative step toward seamless broadband connectivity for all. SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, saying, “We applaud Jio’s commitment to advancing India’s connectivity. We are looking forward to working with Jio and receiving authorization from the Government of India to provide more people, organizations, and businesses with access to Starlink’s high-speed internet services.”
Jio and SpaceX are also exploring additional areas of cooperation to strengthen India’s digital ecosystem further. This strategic partnership underscores Jio’s ongoing efforts to revolutionize broadband accessibility, paving the way for a more connected and digitally empowered India.
