In a rare surgical feat, a giant tumor weighing more than 10 kg was removed successfully from the abdomen of a 70-year-old man from Western Odisha.
The patient was earlier operated for a much smaller tumour ten years back in a cancer hospital in Mumbai. He was suffering from abdominal pain and weight loss. After confirming the tumor by PET scan, a team headed by Senior Gastrointestinal cancer surgeon of Apollo Hospitals, Bhubaneswar Dr. Mohammad Ibraullah successfully removed the tumour in a painstaking surgery that lasted over three hours. It was a huge tumour occupying almost the entire abdomen. He was assisted by Dr. Lakhminarayan Mohanty and Dr. Sadananda Meher from the same department and by Dr. Siddharth Mohanty, Dr. Saumitra Satpathy and Dr. Rebeca Singh from the Department of Anesthesia.
This rare tumor, known as liposarcoma, is rare and arises from fat inside the abdomen. It does not produce much symptoms before it assumes enormous size.
The patient has recovered well after the surgery; and will be back to his normal activities soon, said the doctors treating him. Such major and highly demanding surgeries are being performed regularly because of the availability of ultramodern and sophisticated facilities in the recently commissioned Apollo Cancer Center, Bhubaneswar.
