Biofuel Day: Vedanta Aluminium reinforces commitment to sustainable energy practices at Jharsuguda operations

Jharsuguda, August 09, 2024 (TBB Bureau):  Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, continues to lead the way in sustainable energy practices, reaffirming its commitment at its Jharsuguda operations. In alignment with India’s green energy goals, the company is advancing its mission of sustainability by integrating biofuels into its energy mix.

This announcement coincides with Biofuel Day, observed annually on August 10th, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of non-fossil fuels as sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional energy sources. Biofuels play a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing energy security, making them a key focus for industries aiming to contribute to a greener future.

In the fiscal year 2024, Vedanta’s Jharsuguda operations reached a significant milestone by co-firing 317 metric tonnes of biomass in its 1215 MW Captive Power Plant (CPP). This innovative initiative resulted in a reduction of 382 metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e) per tonne, highlighting the company’s ongoing efforts to minimize its carbon footprint through cutting-edge energy solutions.

Vedanta Jharsuguda is also spearheading energy conservation initiatives by introducing electric vehicle (EV) forklifts across its operations. This shift towards electrification is part of the company’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and lower overall greenhouse gas emissions. Further reinforcing its leadership in sustainable aluminium production, the company’s low-carbon and ultra-low-carbon products, Restora and Restora Ultra, are produced using renewable energy, setting new industry benchmarks.

Expressing his views on the company’s sustainability drive, Sunil Gupta, COO of Vedanta Aluminium and CEO of Vedanta Jharsuguda said, “Our commitment to sustainability drives us to continuously explore and adopt greener energy alternatives. By co-firing biomass in our power plants, we are not only decreasing our reliance on conventional fossil fuels but also significantly reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. This effort is a crucial component of our broader strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”

Vedanta Aluminium’s initiatives are not only contributing to India’s energy transition but are also paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future. The company’s holistic approach to sustainability reflects its unwavering dedication to creating value for its stakeholders while safeguarding the environment for future generations.

As a business of Vedanta Limited, Vedanta Aluminium remains India’s leading aluminium producer, manufacturing over 2.37 million tonnes in FY24, which constitutes more than half of the country’s total aluminium output. The company is renowned for its value-added aluminium products, which are essential to various core industries. Vedanta Aluminium’s commitment to sustainable development is exemplified by its top ranking in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2023 for the aluminium industry, a testament to its world-class practices.

With its state-of-the-art smelters, alumina refinery, and power plants, Vedanta Aluminium is driving the adoption of aluminium as the ‘Metal of the Future,’ crucial for a greener tomorrow.
