Celebrating Independence: A Day of Triumph and Unity at Paradip Port Authority

Paradip, August 15, 2024 (TBB Bureau): The Paradip Port Authority (PPA) joined the nation in celebrating the 78th Independence Day with an exuberance that reflected the spirit of progress and patriotism. The event was a grand showcase of national pride, achievement, and community engagement, set against the backdrop of a thriving port that has become a linchpin in India’s maritime sector.

The festivities commenced with PPA Chairman P.L. Harandh hoisting the National Flag with reverence and grace. The flag fluttered proudly atop a 100-foot giant mast, symbolizing the port’s steadfast commitment to national growth and excellence. The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including PPA Deputy Chairman Nilabhra Dasgupta, and various Heads of Departments, who contributed to the day’s vibrant atmosphere.

In his address, the PPA Chairman highlighted the port’s remarkable achievements over the past fiscal year. Paradip Port Authority had surpassed a significant milestone, with its cargo throughput exceeding 50 million metric tonnes (MMT) by the end of July 2024. This achievement was celebrated as the fastest-ever in the port’s history, marking a spectacular start to the fiscal year 2024-2025. The Chairman attributed this success to Paradip Port’s competitive tariffs, efficient business practices, and a robust ecosystem that makes it a preferred choice for EXIM cargo.

One of the highlights of the day was the announcement of groundbreaking operational milestones. PPA’s pilots had executed the first-ever Ship-to-Ship (STS) operation at the North Oil Jetty (NOJ) for transferring special grade diesel. Furthermore, the port achieved a historic first by handling an ammonium nitrate vessel through the Mediterranean mooring method, setting a precedent for Indian ports. These advancements underscore Paradip Port’s commitment to innovation and operational excellence.

Looking to the future, the PPA has ambitious plans to expand its capacity to 400 MMT by 2030 and 500 MMT by 2047. This expansion will include commissioning new berths and mechanizing existing ones, aiming for over 80% mechanization. The Western Dock project, with a capacity of 25 MMT, is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed well ahead of the 2028 target, enhancing the port’s ability to handle large Cape vessels and reducing logistics costs significantly.

In line with its environmental and sustainability goals, Paradip Port is set to become a Green Port. Plans are underway to construct a hydrogen berth near the South Break Water as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. This initiative will position Paradip as a major hub for hydrogen and its derivatives, such as ammonia and methanol, for maritime propulsion.

The port’s strategic focus on diversification was evident in the development of container services. Major shipping liners like MSC and RCL now offer direct connectivity to Colombo and Klan Ports, marking a significant leap in container traffic. The Multimodal Logistics Park being developed by CONCOR and plans for two new Container Freight Stations (CFSs) further bolster the port’s capabilities.

In addition to its operational and strategic advancements, Paradip Port is committed to social responsibility and environmental stewardship. The port is engaged in a comprehensive corporate environmental responsibility program, including the planting of one lakh trees annually to create an urban forest. Furthermore, a new housing complex and water treatment plant are under construction to meet the needs of the port’s growing community.

The Independence Day celebrations also included a Poets’ Meet organized by the Jagannath Lalita Kala Sansad, the cultural wing of PPA, highlighting patriotic themes. An exhibition football match between the Paradip Port team and Harsina Football Team added a competitive edge to the festivities. The evening concluded with an inter-school dance competition at the Biju Convention Centre, where children showcased their talent and patriotism.

In a special tribute, Harandh honoured exceptional individuals, including H.H. Das, who will be awarded the President’s Police Medal for distinguished services. Prizes were also awarded to the winners of various competitions among local school children and port employees.

The day was a testament to Paradip Port Authority’s dedication to progress, community, and national pride. As the sun set on a day filled with celebration and achievement, it was clear that Paradip Port is not only a gateway of commerce but also a beacon of progress and patriotism.
