Centre unveils Rs 9.1 lakh crore power network expansion plan

New Delhi, November 28, 2024 (TBB Bureau): In a transformative move to bolster India’s electricity infrastructure, the Union Ministry of Power has announced an ambitious investment of ₹9.12 lakh crore to expand the country’s power transmission network by 2031-32. Minister of State for Power Shripad Yesso Naik shared this vision during a address to the Rajya Sabha.

The National Electricity Plan (Transmission) outlines the addition of 1.91 lakh kilometers of transmission lines and 1274 Giga Volt Ampere (GVA) of transformation capacity at 220 kV and above voltage levels over a 10-year horizon from 2022-23 to 2031-32. Furthermore, the plan includes 33.25 GW of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) bi-pole links, showcasing India’s commitment to adopting advanced technology in power transmission.

The inter-regional transmission capacity is set to witness a substantial boost, increasing from the current 119 GW to 143 GW by 2026-27, and further to 168 GW by 2031-32. This growth is expected to provide significant opportunities for electricity generators, equipment manufacturers, transmission service providers, and investors, paving the way for economic expansion and energy security.

The blueprint emphasizes the integration of cutting-edge technology, enhancing cross-border interconnections, and encouraging private sector participation. It also outlines interconnections with neighboring countries such as Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, reaffirming India’s role as a regional power hub.

In parallel, the government is advancing its hydroelectric and renewable energy initiatives. Currently, 28 hydroelectric projects (HEPs) with a combined capacity of 13,997.5 MW and five Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) totaling 6,050 MW are under construction. The Central Electricity Authority has approved detailed project reports for an additional 28 HEPs (19,460 MW) and four PSPs (4,100 MW).

A total of 11 HEPs (8,036 MW) and 44 PSPs (60,050 MW) are undergoing survey and investigation. Complementing these efforts, 29,200 MW of coal-based capacity is under construction, with 18,400 MW awarded and 47,240 MW under consideration.

India’s renewable energy sector is also witnessing unprecedented growth. As of October 31, 2024, a staggering 1,27,050 MW of renewable energy capacity is under implementation, while an additional 89,690 MW is in the bidding stage. These advancements underline the government’s commitment to a sustainable and diversified energy future.

This comprehensive transmission and generation plan underscores India’s determination to build a robust, efficient, and inclusive electricity network, driving economic progress and ensuring energy access for all.
