Rajgangpur, November 14, 2024 (TBB Bureau): Dalmia Cement Bharat Ltd. (DCBL), a subsidiary of Dalmia Bharat Ltd. and a pioneer in sustainable practices within India’s cement industry, is making remarkable strides in rural Odisha with its flagship initiative, Project Annadata. Launched in 2023 with an initial focus on 800 farmers, the project has since expanded to benefit over 5,000 farmers across 31 villages in Sundargarh district, empowering them through sustainable agriculture practices.
At the core of Project Annadata is a commitment to enhancing farm productivity while ensuring environmental sustainability. The initiative equips farmers with high-quality paddy seeds, access to community-run grain banks, and a buyback program that repurposes paddy straw into eco-friendly fuel for Dalmia Cement’s operations. This dual focus on boosting agricultural output and reducing carbon emissions is a win-win for both the farmers and the environment.
The impact of the project has been profound. In its first year alone, the initiative collected over 400 tons of paddy straw from 1,000 farming families, which not only generated additional income for them but also reduced harmful air pollution by preventing straw burning. The straw is being converted into sustainable fuel, further aligning with Dalmia Bharat’s sustainability goals.
The introduction of high-quality seeds has led to a notable increase in paddy yields, ranging from 10 to 15 quintals per acre, thereby improving food security and boosting farmers’ incomes. On average, participants in the project have seen their earnings increase by INR 5,300 per month, significantly improving their standard of living.
The success of Project Annadata was recently acknowledged at the 4th Sustainability Summit & Awards by UBS Forum, where it was recognized as the “Best Sustainable Project of the Year 2023-24.” This prestigious accolade is a testament to the initiative’s contribution to both local livelihoods and environmental sustainability.
Reflecting on the initiative’s progress, Chetan Shrivastav, Executive Director of DCBL and Unit Head of Rajgangpur, said, “Project Annadata embodies Dalmia Bharat’s vision of sustainable growth, where economic progress and environmental responsibility go hand in hand. Many farmers in this region face challenges such as low productivity, limited resources, and a lack of awareness about sustainable farming practices. This initiative not only strengthens their livelihoods but also contributes to the region’s food security and environmental resilience. We are immensely proud of the impact made in just one year and are eager to set new benchmarks in responsible business practices.”
Project Annadata is not only addressing critical challenges in rural agriculture but is also contributing to the achievement of multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Through its innovative and sustainable approach, Dalmia Bharat is setting a transformative example for rural development, paving the way for more inclusive and eco-conscious growth across India.
