Double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker appointed as Brand Ambassador for Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways

New Delhi, September 17, 2024 (TBB Bureau):  In a significant development for India’s maritime sector, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways has announced the appointment of Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker as its new Brand Ambassador. The announcement was made by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today.

Manu Bhaker, who has made history as the only Indian to win two individual Olympic medals in a single Games, has been recognized not only for her sporting prowess but also for her inspiring background. Bhaker, whose father is a marine engineer, embodies the values of discipline, perseverance, and humility that are central to the maritime industry.

Minister Sonowal expressed his enthusiasm for Bhaker’s appointment, stating, “It is a moment of great pride for every Indian and for every member of India’s maritime sector. Manu Bhaker, the daughter of a proud marine sailor, is now set to champion the marine sector of India. Her exceptional achievements in sports and her family’s connection to the marine industry make her an ideal representative. We hope her story will inspire the youth and highlight the promising opportunities within the maritime sector, contributing to the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat by 2047, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

The announcement was made during a special event organized by the Chennai Port Authority in collaboration with Kamarajar Port Authority. The event also celebrated the achievements of several women from the maritime sector and other fields, recognizing their invaluable contributions to nation-building.

Among those honoured were Lt Commander Vartika Joshi, the first female skipper of the Indian crew aboard INSV Tarini; Sonali Banerjee, the first female marine engineer in the history of the Indian Mercantile Marine; Captain Teena Joey, General Manager at JM Baxi Group’s Chennai Branch; and Thulasimathi Murugesan and Manisha Ramadass, who won silver and bronze medals in badminton at the Paris Paralympics, respectively. Rupali Raj Joshi, a surveyor with the Indian Registrar of Shipping, was also recognized.

Minister Sonowal praised the achievements of these women, emphasizing their role in empowering the nation. “The Nari Shakti of Bharat has always been a tremendous source of power. The contributions of these women not only bring pride but also inspire hope and the belief that nothing is impossible. Their stories will encourage many to pursue their passions and contribute meaningfully to our nation’s growth. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are moving closer to realizing the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat by 2047,” Sonowal said.
