The iconic Sun Temple in Konark has become the backdrop for a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering mining-affected communities through sustainable development. The Ministry of Mines, in collaboration with the Government of Odisha, inaugurated the much-awaited DMF (District Mineral Foundation) Exhibition today, marking the beginning of a transformative journey for the region’s communities.

Running from 18th to 21st January 2025, the exhibition — titled “Empowering Communities by Sustainable Development” — showcases the significant strides made in creating self-reliant, resourceful communities through innovative livelihood projects and community-driven initiatives. The event was inaugurated by Farida M. Naik, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Mines, in the presence of key stakeholders, including officials from NALCO, OMC, and the Geological Survey of India (GSI).

With 18 vibrant stalls featuring products from DMF-supported Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL), NALCO, and Vedanta’s HZL, the exhibition highlights the region’s growing commitment to sustainability. From local crafts to innovative livelihood solutions, these displays emphasize the role of DMF in catalyzing positive change and fostering long-term growth in mining-affected communities.

In her inaugural address, Naik emphasized the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to achieving sustainable, inclusive growth in regions impacted by mining activities. She lauded the efforts of the Odisha Government, corporate partners, and other stakeholders in driving impactful initiatives through DMF that are transforming the lives of local populations.

The exhibition, set amidst the historical grandeur of the Sun Temple, not only celebrates contemporary sustainable development but also draws a strong connection to the region’s rich cultural heritage. It provides a dynamic platform for SHGs to share their success stories and engage with industry representatives, government officials, and local communities in meaningful dialogue.

As it continues to unfold, the DMF Exhibition serves as a beacon of hope for mining-affected regions, promoting holistic community growth, resource sustainability, and long-term prosperity. Through these efforts, the Ministry of Mines is fostering a future where communities can thrive independently, ensuring that the benefits of development reach those who need it most.
