In Odisha’s dynamic industrial landscape, the company has marked a significant milestone in its sustainability journey with the successful completion of its ambitious Matri Van initiative — a pledge to plant one lakh saplings in Jharsuguda.
Launched in July 2024 as part of the Government of India’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, Vedanta Aluminium’s Matri Van initiative began with a massive plantation drive that saw active participation from district officials, employees, and enthusiastic school children. Over 2,000 saplings were planted on a reclaimed ash storage area in Kapumal, Jharsuguda district, turning previously barren land into a burgeoning green zone. In less than a year, the company fulfilled its commitment, a powerful testament to its dedication to ecological restoration and community-driven environmental conservation.
The successful plantation of one lakh saplings is poised to bring about transformative benefits for Jharsuguda’s environment, including improved air quality, enhanced carbon sequestration, and the creation of thriving habitats for local biodiversity. More than a symbolic gesture, this initiative demonstrates how purposeful action can convert underutilized lands into vibrant ecological spaces, resonating strongly with the spirit of Earth Day.
Vedanta Aluminium’s achievement with Matri Van is only one facet of its broader, ongoing commitment to sustainability. As one of the world’s largest single-location aluminium smelters, Vedanta’s Jharsuguda unit is at the forefront of the industry’s green transformation. It has significantly expanded its electric fleet, deploying nearly 50 electric lithium-ion forklifts — making it the largest user of such forklifts in India. This transition not only cuts down on fossil fuel use but also significantly reduces the plant’s greenhouse gas emissions, reinforcing Vedanta’s drive towards decarbonization.
In another progressive step, Vedanta Aluminium has entered into a vital Gas Sales Agreement with GAIL Gas Limited to ensure a steady supply of natural gas for powering its casthouse operations. This move is a cornerstone of the company’s shift to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources and underlines its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint over the long term.
Further strengthening its environmental initiatives, Vedanta Aluminium has partnered with PwC to deepen its efforts in biodiversity enhancement and carbon reduction across Odisha. This strategic collaboration will bring in expert insights and structured approaches to environmental management, ensuring the preservation and nurturing of local ecosystems. In FY24 alone, the company recycled an astounding 7.05 billion litres of water, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable resource utilization and efficient water management.
Vedanta’s environmental efforts are not limited to operations; they extend into community engagement, fostering awareness about sustainable living and integrating the principles of a circular economy into its daily practices. Investments in advanced pollution control technologies and a strong focus on waste utilization further amplify its environmental stewardship.
These extensive initiatives have earned Vedanta Aluminium a prestigious 2nd rank on the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment in FY25, placing it among the leaders in responsible practices within the global aluminium sector.
