Paradip, December 21, 2024 (TBB Bureau): The Government of India has taken a significant step toward enhancing safety at the nation’s ports by organizing a one-day workshop on “Dock Safety and the Handling of Hazardous Chemicals” at Paradip Port. The initiative, led by the Directorate General Factory Advice Service and Labour Institutes (DGFASLI) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, marked the fourth edition of its nationwide campaign to elevate safety standards across India’s 12 major ports.
The Paradip Port Authority (PPA), which hosted the event, reaffirmed its role as a leader in promoting operational excellence and safety. Speaking at the workshop, PPA Chairman PL Haranadh underlined the port’s unwavering commitment to maintaining world-class safety practices while improving cargo handling efficiency. “Safety is the foundation of our operations,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of creating a secure work environment for dock workers.
Deputy Chairman Nilabhra Dasgupta, present as the Guest of Honour, added to the discourse on the port’s dedication to fostering a safety-conscious culture.
The workshop included expert-led discussions focusing on critical aspects such as national and international regulations on hazardous chemical handling, skill development for dock workers, and safety innovations. Esteemed speakers from IIT Kharagpur and DGFASLI provided valuable insights into leveraging academic partnerships and technological advancements to enhance safety protocols.
This initiative aligns with DGFASLI’s broader mission to ensure safer working conditions, support India’s expanding trade infrastructure, and promote environmentally sustainable port operations. It also reflects the growing collaboration between stakeholders and government bodies to reinforce safety and operational standards across the maritime sector.
