India’s coal sector achieved a remarkable milestone in December 2024, with total coal production reaching 97.94 million tonnes (MT), a 5.33% growth compared to the 92.98 MT produced in December 2023. This impressive performance reflects the Ministry of Coal’s relentless drive to meet the country’s burgeoning energy demands.

A significant contributor to this growth was the output from captive and other mines, which surged to 18.95 MT in December 2024, marking an exceptional 29.61% increase from 14.62 MT during the same period last year. This performance demonstrates the effectiveness of targeted policies and operational efficiency across the coal sector.

Cumulatively, coal production for the fiscal year 2024-25 up to December stood at 726.29 MT (provisional), an increase of 6.11% compared to the 684.45 MT recorded during the same period in FY 2023-24. This sustained growth underscores the Ministry’s commitment to bolstering coal output to support India’s energy transition and economic aspirations.

In parallel with production, coal dispatch figures also reflected robust growth. December 2024 witnessed a dispatch of 92.59 MT, a 6.36% rise from the 87.06 MT dispatched in December 2023. Captive and other mines led the way with dispatch volumes of 18.13 MT, up by an impressive 31.83% compared to the same period last year. The cumulative dispatch up to December 2024 reached 750.75 MT (provisional), showcasing a 5.58% increase from 711.07 MT during the corresponding period in FY 2023-24.

The Ministry of Coal has consistently undertaken measures to enhance both production and distribution, ensuring a seamless supply chain to meet the energy requirements of key industries and households across the nation. These efforts align with the broader vision of achieving self-reliance in coal production under the banner of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

This steady growth in coal production and dispatch not only highlights India’s strides toward energy security but also reinforces its commitment to fostering a sustainable and robust energy infrastructure. As the nation continues to embrace economic and industrial growth, the coal sector remains pivotal in fuelling this progress while addressing the challenges of rising energy demands.
