New Delhi, October 1, 2024 (TBB Bureau): India’s coal production continues its upward trajectory, with the Ministry of Coal reporting a 5.85% growth in production for FY 2024-25 compared to the same period last year. In September 2024 alone, coal production reached 68.94 million tonnes (MT), surpassing last year’s 67.26 MT for the same month, reflecting a 2.49% increase.
Cumulative coal production for the current fiscal year, up to September 2024, stands at 453.01 MT (provisional), up from 427.97 MT during the same period in FY 2023-24. This steady increase highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen domestic coal production and support the country’s growing energy needs.
Coal dispatches have also witnessed significant growth, with 73.37 MT dispatched in September 2024, marking a 4.35% rise from 70.31 MT during the same period last year. Cumulatively, coal dispatch for FY 2024-25 up to September reached 487.87 MT, a 5.54% increase from 462.27 MT in the previous fiscal.
The surge in coal production and dispatch has led to a robust coal stock position. As of September 29, 2024, the total coal stock at DCB (Designated Coal Beneficiaries) reached 33.46 MT (provisional), marking a staggering 51.07% growth compared to 22.15 MT on the same date last year.
The Ministry of Coal continues to prioritize increased production and optimized dispatch to meet India’s rising energy demands. This positive growth trend strengthens the nation’s energy security and moves India closer to achieving self-sufficiency in coal supply.
