India’s coal sector achieves record growth: 34.2pc surge in production in April-December 2024

India’s coal sector has achieved a remarkable milestone, with captive and commercial coal mines recording an unprecedented 34.2% increase in production during April-December 2024. The total output surged to 131.05 million tonnes (MT), up from 97.665 MT during the same period in 2023, according to the Ministry of Coal.

December 2024 marked a historic high in monthly coal production, with 18.40 MT of coal mined, representing a significant 30.75% increase from December 2023’s daily average production of 0.445 MT. The daily production in December 2024 averaged 0.594 MT, setting a new benchmark in the sector’s efficiency.

Coal dispatches also reached record levels, with 17.67 MT dispatched in December 2024, a 33.20% rise from the previous year. The daily average dispatch stood at 0.570 MT, compared to 0.426 MT in December 2023. For the April-December period, total dispatches hit 137.34 MT, reflecting a 33.95% increase from 102.53 MT in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The Ministry of Coal reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening India’s energy security, emphasizing the sector’s pivotal role in achieving the ambitious “Viksit Bharat 2047” vision. This initiative aims to transform India into a developed nation by 2047 through sustainable growth and economic development, with the coal sector serving as a cornerstone of energy security and industrial progress.
