Angul, November 13, 2024 (TBB Bureau): In a powerful demonstration of inclusion and empowerment, Jindal Asha’s Angul unit, a key initiative of the Jindal Foundation, hosted a two-day orientation and screening event for Special Olympics sports. Held in collaboration with Special Olympics Bharat, Odisha, the event took place on 11th and 12th November 2024, offering Divyang (differently-abled) children an enriching experience filled with specialized training, screenings, and sports activities.
The orientation was graced by esteemed dignitaries from Special Olympics Bharat, Odisha, including Sasmita Mohapatra, Sports Director, and Umakanta Sarangi, the Asia-Pacific National Coach. Under their expert guidance, the program presented hands-on training sessions and showcased competition models specifically for track and field events, with an emphasis on fostering inclusive sports practices.
A highlight of the event was a model BOCCE competition, designed to include both athletes with and without intellectual disabilities in a unified competition. This segment was conducted under the supervision of Mr. Tapas Kumar Mohanty, DM, CSR, and a team of dedicated therapists from Jindal Asha, reflecting the initiative’s commitment to creating spaces for all athletes to participate and excel.
Participants received comprehensive training across various sports, including BOCCE, running, and softball throwing, which were carefully tailored to develop skills, coordination, and confidence among the athletes. Aswini Kumar Sahoo, Principal of O.P. Jindal School, Angul, and Jayant Kumar Mohanty, Head of CSR, Angul, were also present, underscoring the collaborative spirit that the program aimed to inspire.
During the event, eight children were screened by Special Olympics Bharat, Odisha for potential participation in future Special Olympics track and field athletic events, paving the way for these young athletes to aspire to competitive platforms.
This orientation and screening event stands as a testament to the Jindal Foundation’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity, skill development, and empowerment for children with special needs, furthering the vision of a society that embraces and celebrates diversity.
