India’s mining sector has shown strong growth in the production of essential minerals, including iron ore, manganese, aluminium, and copper, during the first nine months (April-December) of FY 2024-25, continuing the upward trend from the record-setting performance of FY 2023-24, the Ministry of Mines announced on Monday.
According to provisional data from the Ministry of Mines, iron ore production increased by 2.5%, rising from 203 million metric tonnes (MMT) in FY 2023-24 to 208 MMT in FY 2024-25, reflecting strong demand in the steel industry.
Manganese ore production saw an 8.3% rise, reaching 2.6 MMT compared to 2.4 MMT in the same period last year.
Chromite production grew by 9.5%, rising from 2.1 MMT to 2.3 MMT, while bauxite production saw a 6.5% year-on-year increase, from 17.0 MMT to 18.1 MMT.
In the non-ferrous metal sector, primary aluminium production rose by 1.6%, increasing to 31.56 lakh tonnes (LT) from 31.07 LT, and refined copper production grew by 7.3%, from 3.69 LT to 3.96 LT.
India continues to be a global leader, ranking as the second-largest producer of aluminium, the fourth-largest producer of iron ore, and among the top 10 producers of refined copper.
The strong performance in mineral production points to sustained economic activity across key sectors, including energy, infrastructure, construction, automotive, and machinery.
