Sambalpur, November 10, 2024 (TBB Bureau): Odisha’s Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management, Suresh Pujari, has emphasized the critical need for responsible fly ash disposal and management in the state’s industrial regions. This pressing call for action was highlighted during a key review meeting held at the Southern Revenue Division office in Sambalpur on Sunday, where officials discussed environmental challenges linked to fly ash emissions in Sambalpur, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda districts. Together, these areas produce nearly 94 percent of Odisha’s thermal power, placing significant demands on waste management systems.
Minister Pujari pointed to unsafe dumping practices and the vast quantities of fly ash generated, which pose considerable risks to public health. Stressing the need for a coordinated approach among local authorities, industries, and environmental agencies, he underscored the urgency of developing a comprehensive and effective action plan for fly ash management. He particularly noted the lack of synergy between the Pollution Control Board and district authorities, which has hindered efficient management efforts.
“We need a permanent solution, and we are open to suggestions from the public and local representatives,” Pujari stated, emphasizing the importance of collaboration across all sectors. He further highlighted the shared responsibility of government officials, industrial stakeholders, and public representatives in addressing the environmental impact of industrial waste.
Pujari called for strict adherence to waste recycling protocols to ensure that treated water and fly ash are reused effectively, minimizing waste production. He urged the Pollution Control Board to work closely with local authorities to enhance the monitoring and regulation of waste disposal.
Minister Pujari’s initiative highlights a critical step towards addressing the environmental challenges posed by Odisha’s industrial sectors, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
The review meeting was attended by senior state government officials, local MLAs, experts, and industry representatives, including District Collectors from Sambalpur, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda. A detailed report on fly ash disposal was presented by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board’s Member Secretary and Chief Engineer, highlighting the environmental and regulatory challenges associated with fly ash dumping. This report addressed the adverse impacts on local ecosystems, particularly groundwater contamination risks.
A key recommendation from the session was the need to ensure that fly ash is securely covered during transportation to prevent spillage onto roads and surrounding areas. The committee also encouraged the use of fly ash in sustainable industrial applications, such as in the construction of roads and buildings, to mitigate environmental hazards.
The Pollution Control Board has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive analysis of groundwater quality in affected areas and assessing the impact of fly ash disposal on water systems. Results from these assessments are expected within two months, with immediate corrective actions to follow if required.
To oversee the safe transportation and disposal of fly ash, a coordination committee comprising district administration, police, and transport officers will be established. This committee will work to ensure that industries comply with environmental regulations, preventing fly ash from being dumped into water bodies or open lands without adequate treatment.
The Odisha government has set a clear agenda to strengthen fly ash management, including the introduction of stricter regulations and the formation of district-level environmental monitoring committees. Further discussions are planned to explore innovative, eco-friendly applications of fly ash, aiming to create sustainable solutions that benefit both industries and local communities.
