NTPC Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar DFO launch wildlife awareness program at Chakrashila Sanctuary

Bongaigaon, October 5, 2024 (TBB Bureau):  In celebration of Wildlife Week, NTPC Bongaigaon partnered with the Divisional Forest Office (DFO), Kokrajhar, to host a wildlife awareness program at the Choraikhola Forest Range within the Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary. The event, held on Saturday, aimed to educate local communities, students, and villagers on the importance of wildlife conservation and the sanctuary’s role in preserving biodiversity.

The program featured prominent speakers, including JK Brahma, Divisional Forest Officer of Haltugaon Division, who emphasized the vital role of local communities in protecting natural habitats. Dhiren Basumatary, Divisional Forest Officer (Wildlife), highlighted the challenges facing wildlife in the region and the urgent need for conservation efforts.

Akhilesh Singh, Head of Project at NTPC Bongaigaon, outlined the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability, noting initiatives such as the planting of 250,000 trees as part of their sustainable development goals. Singh emphasized that such initiatives not only help the environment but also strengthen the organization’s relationship with local communities through impactful actions.

Wildlife expert Sanatan Deka delivered a compelling lecture on the necessity of preserving biodiversity.

The event also included a quiz and drawing competition for 160 school students, designed to foster interest in wildlife conservation. The creative efforts of the students showcased their growing environmental awareness.

The day concluded with an award ceremony recognizing the competition winners. Singh reiterated the importance of educating the younger generation about wildlife’s role in maintaining ecological balance.

This collaborative effort between NTPC Bongaigaon and DFO Kokrajhar not only raised awareness but also inspired local communities to actively engage in protecting their natural heritage, reinforcing a collective responsibility toward the region’s wildlife conservation.
