Bhubaneswar, November 2, 2024 (TBB Bureau): In a strong push towards industrial diversification, Odisha’s Minister of Industries, Skill Development, and Technical Education, Sampad Chandra Swain, emphasized the state government’s commitment to developing a robust ecosystem for textiles and crafts in Odisha.
Speaking at the CII Swayam Srujani – Weaving a Sustainable Future for Odisha’s Textiles and Crafts event, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Odisha here on Saturday, Minister Swain highlighted how strategic policies and support initiatives are reshaping Odisha’s industrial landscape to empower local artisans, foster sustainable practices, and build self-sufficient communities.
“Odisha was traditionally known for mining and metallurgy. Now, however, the government is pushing for expansion to emerging sectors such as textiles and apparel,” said Minister Swain. He noted that prominent companies have already begun investing in Odisha’s textile industry but need a supportive ecosystem to thrive. The government is not only setting up textile parks but is also facilitating the industry’s access to online platforms to boost growth and reach. “Our goal is to enable the people of Odisha to create employment within the state, rather than having to seek jobs elsewhere,” he added, underscoring the state’s vision of self-reliance and local empowerment.
Joining him as Guest of Honour was MLA Akash Dasnayak, who championed innovation and entrepreneurship as critical tools for the revival and global reach of Odisha’s traditional crafts. He urged entrepreneurs to help rejuvenate the state’s ancient heritage in art and culture. “To bring back Odisha’s ancient glory, the society must work hand-in-hand with the government,” he said, encouraging collaboration in uplifting the crafts sector.
The event convened a distinguished audience from industry, government, and the arts to explore pathways for strengthening Odisha’s textile and crafts sector through sustainable practices.
Pradipta Mohanty, Chairman of the CII Odisha State Council, welcomed the attendees, underscoring the importance of promoting Odisha’s heritage globally. “Our rich handloom and handicraft products have vast potential on the international stage. We need to work collectively towards this goal,” he said.
Monalisha Panda, Chairperson of CII IWN (Indian Women Network) Odisha Chapter, highlighted the need for innovative approaches to market access for Odisha’s crafts. She emphasized that empowering women artisans could have a transformative effect on local communities, advancing socio-economic growth for the state as a whole.
Chairman of the Craft Odisha Council, Santosh Mohapatra, brought attention to the pressing challenges artisans face, from limited market exposure to the need for skill enhancement. He called for stronger collaboration between industry and government to address these issues and promote sustainable support for traditional crafts.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Zubina Ali, Co-Chairperson of CII IWN Odisha Chapter, who expressed appreciation for the commitment of all dignitaries and stakeholders to creating a sustainable future for Odisha’s rich crafts and textiles.
CII State Head Ashok Barat was also present, reinforcing CII’s dedication to balancing tradition with modern innovation and ensuring the craftspeople of Odisha receive the recognition they deserve.
