Odisha sets bold vision for $1 trillion economy by 2036

The Odisha chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) unveiled an ambitious roadmap for the state’s economic future at its State Annual Day 2025 event on Wednesday. Under the theme “Viksit Odisha@2036: Towards Setting the Agenda for Nation Building,” industry leaders, government officials, and experts convened to discuss strategies for transforming Odisha into a $1 trillion economy by 2036.

In his inaugural address, Suvendra Behera, Chairman of the CII Eastern Region Council, highlighted Odisha’s competitive edge in energy costs, citing a 30% subsidy with no upper limit as a major attraction for industries, particularly MSMEs. He referenced Rajasthan’s leadership in solar energy, where costs stand at Rs 1.75 per unit, underscoring Odisha’s potential as a key investment destination.

CII Odisha State Council Chairman Dr. Pradipta Mohanty emphasized the state’s impressive economic trajectory, pointing to an annual growth rate of 11.5-12% and a GSDP estimate of 7.5%. He stressed that agriculture, manufacturing, and services would be pivotal in achieving the $1 trillion goal.

To boost industrial and economic development, Devendra Thakar, CEO of Dhamra Port, advocated for a state-specific logistics model to position Odisha as a logistics hub. He also called for a more inclusive industrial ecosystem supporting MSMEs, women entrepreneurs, and tribal businesses, alongside skill development initiatives.

Sunil Gupta, Vice Chairman of CII Odisha State Council 2024-25, delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of all stakeholders.

The event also featured the CII Industry Carnival Awards, recognizing outstanding contributions to the region’s economic growth. A technical session on “Easy Credit Flow and Strong Supply Chain: The Backbone of Industrial Growth” explored ways to enhance credit accessibility and streamline supply chains through technology.

With strong policy incentives, infrastructure expansion, and skill development initiatives, Odisha is on a determined path to driving sustainable industrial growth and contributing significantly to national development.
