Paradip, June 5, 2024 (TBB Bureau): The Paradip Port Authority (PPA) marked World Environment Day 2024 with a series of events centred around the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.”
The observance began with a mass plantation drive at GC Colony, led by PPA Chairman PL Haranadh, and Deputy Chairman Nilabhra Dasgupta, who both planted saplings to symbolize the authority’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
The event saw active participation from various stakeholders, including other Heads of Departments (HoDs) of PPA, residents of the colony, and volunteers from the Paradip Saksharata Samiti (PSS), the social wing of PPA. Together, they planted numerous saplings, contributing to the greening of the area and reinforcing the message of environmental stewardship.
In addition to the plantation drive, the PPA Chairman flagged off a walkathon aimed at promoting greenery development in the locality. This walkathon involved PSS volunteers and PPA garden workers, who paraded through the area, raising awareness about the importance of land restoration and resilience against desertification and drought.
Speaking on the occasion, Haranadh emphasized the critical need for sustainable environmental practices and the role of community involvement in achieving these goals. “Today’s activities are a testament to our collective effort towards restoring our land and building resilience against the adverse effects of climate change,” he said. “We must continue to work together to ensure a greener, more sustainable future for our region and beyond,” he added.
The event at PPA not only highlighted the importance of environmental conservation but also showcased the active participation and enthusiasm of the community in addressing these pressing issues. Through such initiatives, the Paradip Port Authority aims to set a precedent for environmental responsibility and inspire similar efforts across other regions.
World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, is a global platform for raising awareness and taking action on pressing environmental issues. The theme for 2024, “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” underscores the urgent need to restore degraded lands and enhance the resilience of ecosystems and communities to climate-related challenges.
