Rourkela, November 21, 2024 (TBB Bureau): In a significant move to strengthen its raw material base and support the growth of India’s steel industry, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has entered into a strategic long-term agreement with Adani Enterprises Limited to develop and operate the Taldih Iron Mine.
This ambitious project, based on the Mines Developer and Operator (MDO) model, aims to ramp up the mine’s production capacity from the current 2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to an impressive 7 MTPA. The expansion, slated to be completed within two years, includes the construction of a state-of-the-art plant and essential infrastructure. Production under the new model is scheduled to begin in the third year, with operations planned to continue for 25 years.
Currently, the Taldih Iron Mine operates under a contractual arrangement with SAIL, employing mobile crushing and screening plants alongside smaller earth-moving machinery. This new agreement covers a comprehensive upgrade, including infrastructure development and the installation of a long-distance conveyor belt system to connect the Taldih mines with the Railway Siding at Barsua Valley. This conveyor system is to significantly enhance the efficiency of ore transportation.
Notably, the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change granted environmental clearance for the expansion of the Taldih Iron Mine to 7 MTPA on April 28, 2023, marking a key milestone for the project.
The contract signing ceremony witnessed the presence of senior officials from both organisations, including Sudip Pal Chowdhury, Executive Director (Projects), Anand Kumar, CGM (Mines-Projects), and GS Das, CGM (Project-Commercials) from RSP, as well as Rajendra Singh, Joint President & Business Unit Head, Ajit Kumar Patra, Cluster Head, Iron Ore Business, and Jay Viswanath, Project Head, Iron Ore Business from Adani Enterprises Limited.
This strategic collaboration will ensure a consistent supply of high-quality iron ore for SAIL’s current operations and upcoming expansions, bolstering the company’s competitiveness and contributing to India’s ambition of becoming a global steel powerhouse.
The development of the Taldih Iron Mine is expected to play a pivotal role in meeting the growing demands of SAIL’s steel plants while fostering sustainable growth in the region. This agreement not only underscores RSP’s commitment to operational excellence but also highlights the critical role of collaboration in driving industrial progress.
