Solar energy is key to combating climate change: Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki

Bhubaneswar, October 2, 2024 (TBB Bureau):  “Climate change is an urgent problem that requires decentralized, practical energy solutions, and solar energy is one of the most effective ways to combat this crisis,” said Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki, Professor at IIT Bombay and Founder of the Energy Swaraj Foundation, during the launch of the Bhubaneswar Chapter of the foundation at Centurion University.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the university campus, was attended by Prof. Solanki and Prof. Supriya Pattanayak, Vice-Chancellor of Centurion University, along with other distinguished guests.

The Bhubaneswar Chapter aims to drive energy self-reliance by advocating for the adoption of renewable energy, particularly solar power, in line with the Energy Swaraj Foundation’s mission of promoting decentralized energy solutions to address the climate crisis.

Prof. Solanki, who has been a vocal advocate of renewable energy, emphasized the critical role educational institutions must play in advancing sustainable energy practices. “Institutions like Centurion University have a pivotal role in leading this mission. Together, we can make a significant impact by promoting sustainable energy across India,” he remarked.

The newly launched chapter will spearhead initiatives such as workshops, seminars, and training sessions to educate the public about the benefits of solar energy and other renewable sources. It will also implement solar energy projects in rural Odisha, improving access to clean energy and reducing dependence on conventional power sources.

Prof. Pattanayak underscored Centurion University’s commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 7, which focuses on affordable and clean energy. “Through this partnership with the Energy Swaraj Foundation, we are determined to empower communities across Odisha by providing access to sustainable energy solutions,” she said.

Dr. Bijaya Bijeta Nayak, President of the Bhubaneswar Chapter, highlighted the chapter’s role in advancing India’s energy sustainability goals, noting that the initiative will have a lasting impact by educating and empowering communities throughout the state.

This chapter is set to play a transformative role in Odisha’s journey towards a greener, energy-efficient future, combining academic insight with community-driven action to achieve sustainable energy access for all.
