Bhubaneswar, August 31, 2024 (TBB Bureau): Tata Power Central Odisha Distribution Limited (TPCODL) has taken a major step to combat electricity theft by launching a Meter Data Analysis Group (MDAG). This specialized team, consisting of highly skilled professionals, will utilize advanced, in-house developed software to analyze consumer energy meter data, effectively managing large datasets to detect irregularities.
While consumer meters are primarily designed to record consumption data for billing and tariff purposes, they also collect extensive data that can be used for more than just billing. TPCODL plans to use sophisticated analytical techniques on this data to assess the quality of electricity supply, monitor installation integrity, and identify signs of electricity theft and technical losses.
The MDAG’s core mission is to uncover and prevent cases of electricity theft, which presents a significant challenge for the company. By performing in-depth data analysis, the group will generate leads for targeted enforcement actions, thereby reducing commercial losses resulting from illegal practices such as meter tampering or unauthorized connections. Initially, the focus will be on consumers with high energy usage, but the group intends to expand its analysis to include lower consumption users in the future.
Electricity theft is a societal problem that unfairly impacts honest consumers. TPCODL urges the public to report any suspected cases of electricity theft through WhatsApp at 9437158670 or by contacting the call center at 1912. All reports will be treated confidentially.
Commenting on the initiative, TPCODL CEO Arvind Singh stated, “We encourage our consumers to report any instances of electricity theft, as their participation is crucial in combating these illegal activities. Such collective efforts help alleviate the financial burden on honest customers and improve the reliability of our electricity distribution. Our commitment is to provide fair and dependable service, and with the support of the community, we can achieve meaningful progress toward this goal.”
