Bhubaneswar, September 20, 2024 (TBB Bureau): In a significant step towards sustainability, TP Central Odisha Distribution Limited (TPCODL) has unveiled a mass awareness campaign aimed at promoting solar rooftop solutions throughout Central Odisha. This initiative leverages the region’s abundant solar resources and supports the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY).
The campaign was inaugurated at TPCODL’s Management Development Centre in Bhubaneswar by CEO Arvind Singh and Shivram Bikkina, Chief of Solar Rooftop & EV Charging Business at Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited. The launch event emphasized the importance of educating residential, commercial, and industrial sectors on the benefits of solar energy, available subsidies, and the installation process.
As part of the initiative, TPCODL recognized early adopters of solar energy as “Green Champions.” These individuals shared their journeys toward sustainability, inspiring others to follow suit. The event drew over 50 participants, including members from Residential Welfare Associations and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) Associations, highlighting a collective effort to transition to clean energy.
Under the PMSGMBY, consumers can receive Central Financial Assistance of up to Rs 78,000 for a 3kW rooftop solar system. Residents of Bhubaneswar are also eligible for an additional state subsidy of Rs 20,000 per kW through the Green City Mission. Additionally, bank loans of up to Rs 2 lakh are offered at a 7 per cent interest rate, with a 120-month tenure and no prepayment penalties. Group Housing Societies can install rooftop systems to offset common area power usage, receiving a central subsidy of Rs 18,000 per kW for installations up to 500 kW. By adopting solar energy, consumers can significantly reduce their grid power consumption, contributing to climate change mitigation.
Emphasizing the campaign’s broader vision, TPCODL CEO Arvind Singh said, “Our commitment to promoting renewable energy solutions is unwavering. This initiative is not just about installing solar rooftops; it’s about creating lasting change for a sustainable future. We aim to empower residents and businesses to embrace solar energy and contribute to a greener Odisha.”
With this launch, the solar awareness campaign now spans the entire state. Odisha currently boasts an installed solar capacity of around 460 MW, with ambitious plans for expansion.
