New Delhi, December 13, 2024 (TBB Bureau): Celebrating Energy Conservation Week, an initiative by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, proudly announced achieving energy savings of 1.3 million Giga Joules (GJ). This remarkable milestone is the result of the company’s trailblazing efforts in energy efficiency and sustainability. Additionally, Vedanta Aluminium has achieved a 10.16% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity against its 2021 baseline, reaffirming its leadership in driving industrial decarbonization.
As part of its commitment to sustainable operations, Vedanta Aluminium has also made a significant stride by sourcing 1.3 GW of renewable energy, underscoring its transition toward cleaner energy solutions.
Vedanta Aluminium has implemented several advanced technologies to enhance energy efficiency across its operations. The company has introduced graphitized cathode enhancements in its smelting process, which reduce current consumption, lower GHG emissions, and improve operational efficiency. Indigenously developed Vedanta pot controllers have been deployed, cutting energy usage by 200–250 kWh per tonne of aluminium while optimizing smelting operations. In addition, specific coal consumption in its power plants has been significantly reduced, resulting in lower GHG emissions and enhanced power efficiency.
At its refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha, advanced graphitized pots have replaced traditional boilers, improving energy conservation efforts. In its Jharsuguda smelter, the company has adopted measures such as Voltage Drop (VLD) optimization and successfully reduced cathode voltage drop to enhance energy efficiency. Similarly, the BALCO smelter in Korba, Chhattisgarh, has implemented cathode relining and graphitization techniques, achieving significant energy efficiency gains across the facility.
Speaking on the occasion, Sunil Gupta, Chief Operating Officer, Vedanta Aluminium, emphasized the company’s focus on sustainable growth.
“At Vedanta Aluminium, energy management is central to our net-zero journey. Innovations like our patented ‘Vedanta Lining Design’ for smelting pots and expanding renewable energy adoption enable us to reduce emissions and enhance operational efficiency. Ranking 1st in the S&P Global Sustainability Assessment 2023 reflects our belief that industrial progress must go hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility. Energy Conservation Week reinforces our dedication to pioneering sustainable practices for a greener future,” Gupta said.
Vedanta Aluminium has also introduced a comprehensive energy efficiency training program for its workforce. Through various awareness campaigns, the company ensures that its employees play an active role in optimizing energy use. The adherence to global standards such as ISO 50001 for Energy Management further reflects its commitment to operational excellence and sustainability.
Vedanta Aluminium, a subsidiary of Vedanta Limited, is India’s largest producer of aluminium, contributing over 2.37 million tonnes in FY24, which accounts for more than half of the country’s total aluminium production. Recognized globally, the company leads the way in value-added aluminium products, which are pivotal for industries aiming for a sustainable future.
As the world transitions toward cleaner energy and materials, Vedanta Aluminium is setting benchmarks in leveraging aluminium, the ‘Metal of the Future,’ to build a greener tomorrow.
