Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has inaugurated a new railway line in a significant expansion of its logistics infrastructure, reinforcing its supply chain capacity. This milestone aligns with the commissioning of its 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Kalahandi district, Odisha, ensuring seamless inbound and outbound movement of raw materials and commodities. Additionally, this development contributes to the company’s target of achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050 or earlier, as the new railway line is set to reduce carbon emissions by 262 tonnes of carbon dioxide (tCO₂) annually.

The newly commissioned 13.4 km railway line marks a crucial step towards Vedanta Lanjigarh’s vision of achieving 100% rail co-efficiency in its logistics operations. The infrastructure upgrade ensures that all material movements are conducted via rail, enhancing efficiency and sustainability. Furthermore, six new loop lines have been introduced within the in-plant yard, accompanied by an upgraded electronic signaling system, boosting the plant’s capacity to handle up to 25 million tonnes of raw materials and commodities annually and enabling the movement of 20 rakes per day with improved turnaround times.

A key highlight of this project is the transition from Relay Room Interlocking (RRI) to Electronic Interlocking (EI), marking a shift from manual to digital signaling systems. This cutting-edge enhancement significantly improves operational efficiency, enhances safety, and prolongs equipment lifespan.

Speaking on this achievement, Sunil Gupta, Chief Operating Officer – Vedanta Aluminium, said, “The commissioning of a 13.4 km railway line at Vedanta Lanjigarh is a transformative step that will streamline logistics, reduce turnaround time, and support our long-term production goals, while also reinforcing our commitment to digital innovation and safe operations.”

With this strategic infrastructure development, Vedanta Aluminium continues to integrate advanced railway systems with digital operations, setting new benchmarks in the aluminium industry. The expansion not only strengthens supply chain efficiency but also reinforces the company’s commitment to India’s industrial growth and sustainable development.
