Jagatsinghpur, December 10, 2024 (TBB Bureau): In a dramatic turn of events, palpable tension engulfed the gates of JSW at Nuagaon in Erasama tehsil of Jagatsinghpur district, as local residents staged a vociferous protest on Tuesday against the company’s large-scale felling of trees. The demonstration spotlighted the villagers’ concerns over environmental degradation, loss of livelihoods, and unfulfilled promises of compensation.
The villagers, united in their dissent, demanded the immediate cessation of tree-cutting activities and the removal of machinery stationed near the company’s boundary wall. They alleged that the deforestation caused by the company had not only disrupted their environment but also obstructed traditional grazing grounds for their livestock.
“We welcomed the company’s establishment, believing it would bring development. But instead, it has brought devastation. Our livestock are being prevented from grazing, and the promised compensation remains a distant dream,” said a protesting villager. Another local lamented the company’s failure to deliver on its commitments, asserting, “Until the company and administration come forward to address our grievances, we will not budge.”
The protesters also called for immediate restoration of the affected areas and warned of intensifying their agitation if their demands were ignored. The community’s resolve underscored a broader demand for justice and accountability from JSW.
Local police arrived at the site to assess the escalating tensions and initiated an investigation into the dispute. However, the situation remains unresolved as negotiations between the company and the villagers have yet to yield any concrete results.
The protest highlights critical issues of environmental preservation and community rights. As the standoff continues, the villagers’ determination to protect their environment and livelihoods serves as a poignant reminder of the growing friction between industrial development and grassroots concerns.
All eyes are now on the ongoing negotiations, with hopes pinned on a resolution that ensures justice for the affected community while addressing the pressing need for sustainable development.
