The Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has achieved a significant medical milestone by becoming the first healthcare institution in Odisha to introduce the cutting-edge LOT CRT (Left-sided Optimized Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy) technology. This advanced heart failure treatment is designed to deliver superior clinical outcomes and significantly improve the quality of life for patients suffering from cardiac conditions.
The pioneering procedure was successfully performed by Dr. Panchanan Sahoo, Senior Professor in the Department of Cardiology, under the guidance of renowned cardiologist Dr. Anindya Ghosh from Madras Medical Mission. The first LOT CRT procedure in Odisha was conducted on December 13, 2023, followed by a second successful procedure at KIMS on January 9, 2025.
LOT CRT technology ensures improved synchronization between the heart chambers, enhances contraction efficiency, and lowers the risk of complications. Unlike conventional RV (Right Ventricular) pacing, which has a 20 percent chance of leading to heart failure, LOT CRT represents the next stage in the evolution of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy. The technique involves placing the pacing lead towards the left side of the ventricular septum, the wall that separates the heart’s two ventricles. This precise placement narrows the QRS complex — a critical measurement of the heart’s electrical activity — restoring it to normal and enhancing the heart’s natural contractions.
Dr. Panchanan Sahoo has been instrumental in advancing cardiac care in Odisha. A pioneer in electrophysiology (EP) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA), he first introduced these transformative technologies to the state in 2008. With the visionary leadership and support of KIMS founder, Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Dr. Sahoo established a state-of-the-art EP lab at the institute, setting new benchmarks in cardiac treatment.
Dr. Sahoo, along with his esteemed colleagues, electrophysiology specialists Dr. Anupam Jena and Dr. Milan Ghadei, has successfully treated numerous patients with complex cardiac conditions. Through the integration of advanced EP and RFA procedures, KIMS continues to redefine the standards of cardiac care, ensuring that patients in Odisha have access to world-class medical interventions.
