Modern safeguards in anaesthesia reduce post-surgery complications, says KIMS doctor

Bhubaneswar, October 17, 2024 (TBB Bureau): The evolution of anaesthesia over the centuries has not only advanced patient safety but also dispelled many myths surrounding its use. Marking Anaesthesia Day on October 16, Dr. Amrita Panda, Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology at KIMS, highlighted the significant progress in the field and the modern safeguards in place to ensure safe and effective patient outcomes.

“Primum non nocere,” or “first, do no harm,” a guiding principle from the Hippocratic Oath more than 2,000 years ago, remains central to anaesthesiology. Dr. Panda emphasized that while healthcare is complex and not immune to human error, today’s anaesthesiologists are supported by cutting-edge technology designed to minimize risks.

“Modern monitoring equipment serves as our ‘unsleeping eyes,’ allowing us to detect early signs of issues like hypoxia,” she explained. These advanced monitors continuously track vital signs, enabling the swift correction of any abnormalities. Global standards, such as those set by the International Task Force on Anaesthesia Safety, help ensure thorough monitoring of oxygenation, ventilation, circulation, and body temperature.

Recent advances in anaesthesia technology and pharmaceuticals have greatly reduced recovery times. “With the introduction of short-acting opioids and advanced inhalation agents, patients experience less drowsiness and postoperative nausea,” Dr. Panda added. She noted the importance of monitoring anaesthesia depth to prevent intraoperative awareness, a rare but serious concern.

Dr. Panda also sought to dispel common misconceptions about anaesthesia, such as fears of long-term memory loss, waking up during surgery, or fatal outcomes. “These beliefs are outdated. Today, ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia offers a safe alternative to general anaesthesia in many cases,” she said.

At KIMS, the Department of Anaesthesiology is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and follows rigorous protocols to prioritize patient safety. “We customize drug dosages for each patient, and our Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) ensures safe, monitored recovery,” Dr. Panda explained.

The KIMS team, comprising doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff, is dedicated to providing comprehensive, compassionate care. Dr. Panda concluded, “Our focus is on evidence-based practices to ensure the safety and well-being of all our patients, while continuing to challenge outdated myths.”
