The Ministry of Coal has announced a landmark achievement in coal production and dispatch for the calendar year 2024, setting new records and reinforcing India’s progress toward energy security and self-reliance under the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Provisional data reveals that coal production soared to an unprecedented 1,039.59 million tonnes (MT) in 2024, reflecting a remarkable 7.28% increase over the 969.07 MT produced in 2023. This milestone is a testament to the Ministry’s strategic initiatives aimed at boosting domestic coal output to meet the country’s escalating energy demands.

Coal dispatches for 2024 also achieved historic highs, reaching 1,012.72 MT, a significant 6.56% rise compared to the 950.39 MT recorded in the previous year. This consistent upward trend in production and dispatch underscores the coal sector’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a reliable and timely supply of coal to power plants and key industries, thereby fortifying India’s energy infrastructure.

The Ministry has emphasized that this exceptional performance aligns with its mission to reduce reliance on coal imports, enhance self-sufficiency, and promote sustainable growth. Infrastructure improvements and the optimization of mining operations have played a pivotal role in these achievements.

These milestones not only highlight the coal sector’s robust growth but also demonstrate its crucial contribution to strengthening India’s energy security and supporting the nation’s economic development. As India continues its journey toward a sustainable energy future, the coal sector remains a vital pillar in meeting the country’s diverse energy needs.
