NEW DELHI, APRIL 18, 2024 (TBB BUREAU): In a resounding achievement for India’s defence capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has conducted a highly successful flight-test of the Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile (ITCM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha.
During the meticulously orchestrated test, all subsystems of the missile performed impeccably, meeting or exceeding expectations. The comprehensive monitoring of the missile’s performance was facilitated by a network of Range Sensors, including Radar, Electro Optical Tracking System (EOTS), and Telemetry, strategically deployed by ITR at various locations to ensure seamless coverage of the flight path. Moreover, the flight of the missile was closely monitored from the Su-30-Mk-I aircraft of the Indian Air Force, underscoring the collaborative effort and multi-dimensional approach to testing.
Displaying exceptional precision and capability, the missile flawlessly followed its intended trajectory, utilizing waypoint navigation and executing a very low altitude sea-skimming flight. This successful flight test further affirms the robust performance of the indigenous propulsion system developed by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), Bengaluru.
Equipped with advanced avionics and software, the missile boasts enhanced reliability and performance, making it a formidable asset for India’s defence arsenal. Spearheaded by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru-based DRDO laboratory, in collaboration with various other DRDO laboratories and Indian industries, the development of this cutting-edge technology marks a significant stride towards bolstering India’s indigenous defence capabilities.
The test witnessed the presence of esteemed senior scientists from various DRDO laboratories, alongside representatives from the production partner, underscoring the collective effort and collaboration that underpins such groundbreaking achievements.
Commending the DRDO team for their exemplary achievement, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended his heartfelt congratulations, emphasizing the significance of developing indigenous long-range subsonic cruise missiles powered by indigenous propulsion systems as a major milestone for Indian defence research and development.
Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, echoed the sentiment of pride and accomplishment, congratulating the entire team on the successful conduct of the ITCM launch. This remarkable feat not only showcases India’s technological prowess but also reaffirms its commitment to self-reliance and advancement in defence capabilities on the global stage.
