Raising concerns over the growing health risks associated with ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and refined seed oils, BJP Member of Parliament Naveen Jindal on Wednesday urged the government to implement stricter food labelling laws and stronger regulatory measures. Speaking in Parliament, Jindal highlighted the rising cases of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, which he attributed to excessive consumption of highly processed food products laden with salt, sugar, unhealthy fats, and artificial additives.

Jindal called for greater transparency in food labelling to empower consumers to make informed dietary choices. He pointed out that misleading packaging and lack of clear disclosures on harmful ingredients prevent consumers from understanding the risks associated with these products.

“Many people are unaware of what they are eating due to deceptive labelling and the absence of clear information on processing methods and unhealthy additives,” Jindal said. He urged the government to mandate front-of-pack labelling and introduce QR code-based transparency to help consumers easily access detailed nutritional information.

To address the issue, Jindal proposed the formation of an expert committee to study the impact of UPFs and refined seed oils on public health. He also recommended the presentation of a White Paper to educate citizens on the potential health hazards posed by these food products.

Furthermore, Jindal advocated for the promotion of cold-pressed oils, traditional cooking methods, and minimally processed foods as healthier alternatives. He stressed that as India advances towards Viksit Bharat, ensuring better public health through food safety and nutrition awareness must be a top priority.
