Ahmedabad/Bhubaneswar, July 16, 2024 (TBB Bureau): Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC), a prominent player in India’s mining and mineral processing sector, has achieved a significant milestone with the successful execution of a Coal Mining Development and Production Agreement with the Union Coal Ministry. The agreement pertains to the “Kudanali-Lubri” coal mine located in Odisha, solidifying GMDC’s commitment to bolstering the energy sector.
The event, held at Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi on Monday, marked GMDC’s entry into its third commercial coal mine in Odisha. This strategic move underscores GMDC’s strategic vision and deep understanding of Odisha’s mining landscape.
The “Kudanali-Lubri” mine, situated in the Angul district, is strategically positioned near GMDC’s existing coal mine, “Baitarni West,” enabling synergies in resource optimization and operational efficiency.
With an estimated reserve of 396.10 million tonnes of thermal coal, the addition of the “Kudanali-Lubri” mine significantly enhances GMDC’s coal reserves, which now approximate 2040 million tonnes.
Commenting on the development, GMDC Managing Director Roopwant Singh emphasized, “We are dedicated to driving growth and stability in the energy sector. The inclusion of the ‘Kudanali-Lubri’ coal mine in our portfolio is a major milestone, enhancing our resource base and operational capabilities in a single state beyond Gujarat.”
GMDC, a State Public Undertaking of the Government of Gujarat, is renowned for its role as a leading mining entity in India. Currently operating five lignite mines across Kutch, South Gujarat, and Bhavnagar regions, GMDC stands as the largest merchant seller of lignite in the country, reaffirming its pivotal position in the mining sector.
