IIM Sambalpur to offer vernacular language mentoring for small business owners

Sambalpur, July 12, 2024 (TBB Bureau): In a pioneering move aimed at revitalizing local businesses while preserving cultural heritage, IIM Sambalpur has launched the second edition of its 12-day weekend certificate program, titled the ‘Small Business Management Training Programme.’ This initiative, organized in collaboration with SIDBI and conducted under the Centre for Responsible Business, targets Master Weavers from Western Odisha.

The program covers essential subjects such as design, digital marketing, GST compliance, financial management, operations, and communication skills. Approximately 25 Master Weavers are currently undergoing training with a focus on enhancing their market presence through digital platforms like Flipkart, Amazon, and ONDC.

IIM Sambalpur Director Prof. Mahadeo Jaiswal emphasized the institute’s commitment to supporting India’s indigenous handloom industry. He highlighted India’s historical textile prowess, which has diminished drastically from contributing 25 per cent of the world’s production pre-colonization to less than 3 per cent today.

“We believe the textile industry is pivotal for India’s progress,” Prof. Jaiswal stated. “Recognizing the need for business acumen among our skilled weavers, we are proud to be the first management institute in India to offer business education in vernacular languages, specifically tailored to empower local enterprises.”

He further added, “The upcoming training phase aims to sharpen their market creation skills, focusing on the five Ps of marketing and global market trends. Incubation support for a startup targeting global product marketing is also underway, with the vision to establish a ‘Bunkar Valley’ akin to Silicon Valley, dedicated to elevating India’s weaving industry on the global stage.”

Sambalpur Collector Akshay Sunil Agrawal stressed the importance of addressing sustainability challenges in India, stating, “Bridging generational gaps and thriving in the market requires understanding market dynamics and adopting innovative strategies. Initiatives like this, which incorporate feedback and interactive sessions, play a crucial role in overcoming challenges and fostering sustainable solutions.”

Ramkrishna Meher, a National Awardee in Handloom (2015) and World Craft Council Awardee (UNESCO-2018), praised IIM Sambalpur’s efforts, saying, “IIM Sambalpur’s initiative has brought significant changes to the lives of weavers, preserving weaving traditions and empowering the community to reach international markets.”

Surendra Meher, a three-time UNESCO Awardee and National Awardee (1991), highlighted the rich history of Sambalpuri weaving, stating, “Sambalpuri weaving is a centuries-old art form and cultural heritage of Odisha. The role of weavers in this craft is irreplaceable by machines. IIM Sambalpur’s efforts are crucial in transforming lives and safeguarding this invaluable heritage.”
