Marking the Odia New Year and Maha Bishuba Sankranti, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday announced a ₹215 crore redevelopment package for the revered Maa Tarini Temple at Ghatagaon in Keonjhar district. The landmark initiative reflects the state government’s renewed commitment to preserving and promoting Odisha’s rich religious and cultural heritage.
Announced during the New Year festivities, the ambitious plan envisions a comprehensive transformation of one of Odisha’s most cherished shrines. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) will guide the execution of various development components, including temple restoration, beautification, and major infrastructure upgrades aimed at enriching the experience of pilgrims and visitors.
As per official sources, the project will include construction of new approach roads, enhanced pilgrim amenities, expanded parking facilities, modern lighting systems, improved sanitation, and robust infrastructure to promote spiritual tourism. The temple complex will also feature rest houses, food courts, a cultural interpretation centre, and upgraded security arrangements to efficiently manage large crowds during peak festivals.
“Maa Tarini holds a sacred place in the hearts of millions of Odias. This ₹215 crore initiative will transform the shrine into a major spiritual destination,” said Chief Minister Majhi, underlining the temple’s deep emotional and cultural significance.
The announcement has been widely welcomed by local residents, devotees, and tourism stakeholders, who see the project as a catalyst for both cultural revival and regional economic development through increased tourism.
To balance tradition with modernity, the DPR will be prepared in consultation with heritage conservation experts, temple authorities, and local leaders. Special emphasis will be placed on preserving the temple’s architectural authenticity and cultural spirit throughout the renovation process.
