The state-of-the-art New Hot Strip Mill-2 of SAIL-run Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has crossed a major milestone with its successful commissioning recently. The Mill is now gearing up for the Performance Guarantee Test in the next phase.

RSP Director In-charge Atanu Bhowmick visited the Mill to congratulate the collective on successful completion of the commissioning test. The DIC interacted with the senior officers and employees of the department and urged them to now gear up for the Performance Guarantee Test. During this test, coils of different grades with critical dimensions and sections will be rolled; and shortcomings, if any will be liquidated.

The Hot Strip Mill-2 had rolled its first coil on January 31, 2020. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic and other issues, the stabilization process got delayed. On October 31, 2021, the second coil was rolled and thereafter the coil rolling process was streamlined and geared up. Since then, the Mill has rolled out more than 1,65,000 tonnes of coil while 1,40,000 tonnes of coil has been dispatched through rail and road. Recently, the Mill rolled slabs of width 2150 mm and 2020 mm which is a noteworthy success.

The Hot Strip Mill-2 with 3 Million Tonne per annum (MTPA) capacity is a state-of-the-art mill with few parallels in India and will be producing world-class hot rolled (HR) coils. The Mill has been set up at a cost of more than Rs. 3000 crore and will enrich the product basket and will enhance the Company’s market share and will be a game changer for RSP in the long run.

With high level of automation, this mill would produce coils of Carbon Structural Steel, High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) steel, High Carbon Steel, LPG Cylinder Steel, Low Alloy Steel, API (up to X100) Pipe Steel and Auto-grade steel. The thickness of the coils would be between 1.2 mm to 25.4 mm, while the width would be between 725 mm to 2150 mm. The maximum coil weight would be to the tune of 35 tonnes. Equipped with the latest and sophisticated technology, the Mill is likely meet the stringent requirements of the customers in terms of quality, finish, dimensions and other parameters.
