TPWODL, the power distribution company of Western Odisha, has undertaken several initiatives to safeguard elephants within its Elephant Corridor Project at various stages. The company stands out as one of the few discoms actively engaged in the Elephant Corridor Project, demonstrating a commitment to wildlife protection.
The Elephant Corridor is a crucial conservation project aimed at preserving wildlife habitats. To support conservation efforts and promote harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife, TPWODL recognized the necessity of robust electricity infrastructure tailored to the corridor’s unique requirements.
In a proactive move, TPWODL has undertaken the task of enhancing the existing distribution lines and implementing insulated conductors within the Elephant Corridor and Elephant Movement areas. This swift action aims to prevent elephant electrocution. The project has incurred an expenditure exceeding Rs 150 crore thus far.
Significant progress has been made, with 40,688 HT intermediate poles and 8,422 LT intermediate poles erected in elephant movement areas. Additionally, 481 km of AB cable and 970 km of 11KV insulated covered conductor have been installed in existing LT and HT lines, respectively.
Notably, in Kalahandi district alone, 5,674 HT poles and 534 LT poles have been erected around elephant movement areas. Furthermore, 42 km of AB cable and 20 km of insulated cover conductor have been installed to replace bare conductors in the district. In Narla Block, 812 HT interposing poles have been erected along the existing 11KV line, aiming to minimize power disruptions during elephant movements. It’s important to highlight that power supply in these areas is routinely shut down during elephant movements as a proactive safety measure.
