Utkal Alumina’s proactive measures to control outbreak of diarrhoea in Tikiri and Kashipur

Utkal Alumina International Limited (UAIL), a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries Limited of Aditya Birla Group which is committed towards the health and wellbeing of its periphery villagers, sprang into action as soon as came to know about the outbreak of diarrhoea in Kashipur Block.

A responsible corporate, UAIL sent its medical team along with the CSR team to the diarrhoea-affected village Dudukabahal and Jhodia Sahi in Tikiri on Friday and Saturday to offer immediate medical assistance to patients.

During the visit, doctors from Utkal Hospital treated diarrhoea patient Krushna Gouda and supplied medicines along with halogen tablets in the presence of Rayagada Sub Collector, and Tehsildar and BDO of Kashipur. Four more patients, including three infants were also treated and supplied with medicines. For disinfection of the surrounding village, Utkal Alumina supplied 25 kgs of bleaching powder to the Anganwadi worker of that village.

The UAIL team also visited Jhodia Sahi under Tikiri and joined hands with the healthcare team of Kashipur Community Health Centre to extend required support services during home visits and treatment of diarrhoea affected people there.

Utkal Hospital of Utkal Alumina which is well equipped with necessary facilities to deal with such crisis, has treated as many as 122 diarrhoea patients since last one week. Of them, 74 patients were given required medicines and doctors’ advice and 48 were admitted and provided with adequate treatment. All the patients were discharged from hospital after recovery.

UAIL has formed a special medical team which has been extending doorstep medical support to the patients and coordinating with the government medical team as and when required. This apart, the CSR wing of UAIL has been creating awareness on preventive measures of diarrhea in the surrounding villages.

During her visit to diarrhoea-affected area at Tikiri on Saturday, Rayagada Collector & District Magistrate Swadha Dev Singh visited the Utkal Hospital, Oshapada along with Rayagada CDMO Dr. Lalmohan Routray, Sub Collector Bhimsen Sabar, Kashipur Tehsildar Sarat Chandra Sabar, BDO Debasis Kar, DPM Rajesh Patnaik and other Government officials and discussed the prevailing health issues with the doctors and officials of Utkal Alumina. She asked the UAIL authorities to keep 30 beds ready to treat diarrhoea patients in case of requirement.

Speaking about the situation, UAIL Unit Head Mazhar Beig said, “We are prepared to safeguard our community from such health crisis through our well-equipped Utkal Hospital and other health related services. Twenty eight beds are currently in service to treat siarrhoea patients and 32 more beds will be kept ready to treat such patients. In case of further requirement, the number of beds will be increased.”

“Our medical team and CSR team are on forefront to control the crisis. I believe, with the joint effort of Government Health Department and Utkal Alumina, we will definitely control the outbreak and safeguard our community,” he added.
