Centurion University, in partnership with the Australian Rules Football Association of India (ARFAI), successfully hosted the 10th National Championship of Australian Rules Football and the inaugural Women’s Zonal Championship . The three-day event took place from January 24 at the University’s state-of-the-art sports complex in Bhubaneswar, marking a historic milestone for the sport in India.
The championship was inaugurated by Odisha Minister for Sports & Youth Services, Surjyabanshi Suraj, alongside Prof. Mukti Kanta Mishra, President of Centurion University.
The tournament saw 18 teams from 10 states, including Bihar, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand, Kerala, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and West Bengal, compete in both junior (under-16) and senior divisions. Over 200 players and officials participated in this prestigious event, showcasing remarkable skills and sportsmanship.
During the inauguration, Minister Suraj expressed the government’s commitment to promoting sports in Odisha, emphasizing the importance of indigenous games like Kho-Kho now gaining international recognition. He stated, “Our government is dedicated to the comprehensive development of sports and sportspersons in the state. Preserving and promoting these traditional games will continue to be a priority.”
A key highlight of the event was the debut of the Women’s Zonal Championship, a significant achievement for gender inclusivity in sports. This historic competition, in collaboration with the Thamarrurr Youth Indigenous Corporation (TYIC) from Australia, featured teams from Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkhand.
On the second day, Dr. Sourjya Ranjan Parija, Deputy Director of NCC Odisha, and Olympian Anuradha Biswal graced the occasion as distinguished guests. Biswal shared her inspiring journey as an international athlete, encouraging participants to stay focused and dedicated. Dr. Parija stressed the importance of sports in fostering discipline and leadership qualities, motivating the youth to excel in their athletic careers.
Sudip Chakraborty, Founder of ARFAI and former Team India Captain, highlighted the event’s significance in advancing Australian Rules Football in India. He stated, “The incredible participation and enthusiasm displayed by players are a testament to the sport’s growing popularity and its potential to create opportunities for athletes nationwide.”
This championship not only showcased the rising talent in Australian Rules Football but also solidified Centurion University’s position as a leading institution for sports development, fostering cultural exchange, and nurturing talent across various disciplines.
