Paris, July 31, 2024 (TBB Bureau): India has made a stellar start at the Paris Olympics, securing two medals within the first few days of competition. On July 30th, the Indian athletes received a rousing welcome at the inaugural India House in Parc de la Villette, amidst cheers from fans and administrators.
Nita M. Ambani, IOC member and Founder-Chairperson of Reliance Foundation, warmly addressed the athletes, saying, “Welcome to the first-ever India House at the Olympics! Let’s celebrate the icons of today, tomorrow, and forever. Every single one of you has made us hold our heads higher with pride.”
Ambani extended special congratulations to Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh for their achievement in the 10m air pistol mixed team event. “A special shout-out to Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh for winning India’s second medal this morning. Sarabjot Singh is here with us today, and let’s give him a standing ovation.”
The athletes were greeted with enthusiasm, marked by the throbbing beats of the dhol and a traditional Indian tikah ceremony. The event was graced by several prominent athletes, including medal-winning shooter Sarabjot Singh, opening ceremony flag bearer Sharath Kamal, former world No. 1 doubles player Rohan Bopanna, young tennis star Sumit Nagal, 14-year-old prodigy Dhinidhi Desinghu, and Manika Batra, the first Indian table tennis player to reach the round of 16 in singles at the Olympics. Other notable athletes present included Ramita Jindal and Arjun Babuta.
In a symbolic gesture, the athletes lit the digital flame at India House, showcasing their support for the Olympic movement. They were felicitated by Ambani, who thanked them for their dedication and for representing the nation on the grandest stage.
